Chris goes rhino trekking

Let's answer the easy questions first... Yes. We did see rhinos. No. The trekking was not hard.

We drove around with the park rangers and a police officer (for poachers) until we found tracks and then we walked a short way to get as close to the rhinos as the rangers would allow.  This is a mother and daughter. Notice that both are de-horned to protect them from poachers.

The rhinos live in a very large conservation area and are closely monitored. The rangers report on the health of each rhino. Many of the rhinos are de-horned.  If a sick rhino is seen then a vet is flown in from Windhoek immediately.  With their efforts, the rhino population in Namibia is increasing with now over 100 living in the conservation area.

Along our drive, we also saw giraffes, ostriches, springbok, and kudu.

Last night's dinner was an outdoor BBQ (lamb, chicken, boar) served community style with both the guests and guides attending.  The food was quite good but even better was watching the staff take pride in their culture.

Tomorrow is another travel day. Destination = The Skeleton Coast.
