Chris sees many Moai

Today, I walked. A lot. Almost 9 miles. It was great.

The day started off with a 6 mile hike along the northern coast ending at the beach and a collection of restored Moai.

After lunch of tomato soup, beef and Moai shaped butter

We hiked to the quarry where the Moai were carved.  It is a large mountain of compressed volcanic ash from which the statues were carved and then slid down the hill and somehow carried to their final resting places around the island.  There are still several Moai at the quarry which were not placed or not finished being carved from the mountain.

Tomorrow is another long day of hiking. It is expected to be the last good day of weather for the week.

Fun fact: I arrived here on a 787 plane and was surprised that such a big plane could land on this small island. It turns out that Nasa built the the 2 mile long runway here as an emergency landing spot for the shuttle.
