Chris goes to the most remote place on Earth

It's a 5 hour flight from Santiago to Easter Island.  Am I the only one who inspects the crowd sitting by the gate and thinks "I hope that person doesn't sit next to me"?  Like there was a guy with a T-Shirt that had a a picture of a beer on it and said "Marinate your mind." Either he thinks that is a great T-Shirt or he willy-nilly picks a shirt to wear. Neither are great options.

It's humid here but the warmth is welcome after winter. The lodge is great but I don't think the weather is going to be that cooperative.  I wanted to do some mountain biking but might have to do mostly hiking due to the high winds.

For those who are unfamiliar, Easter Island is famous for the Moai statues. They were carved from 1250 to 1500 and moved to places all along the coast of the island.  There are about 1000 statues still on the island but most have toppled over due to civil war or time. These statues are positively massive and no one knows how the people moved the statues from the quarry to the platforms along the coast.

Today, I hiked about 2 miles from the hotel down to the southern coast to see my first statues.  These are the unrestored ones so they are toppled over and lying on their faces.  The reddish rock was once on top of the statue like a headdress.

Tomorrow, I have about 5 miles of hiking along the coast to see more statues on the north side of the island and to see the quarry where many unfinished statues remain.

Here's a video of the southern coast
