We had another lazy day at the beach. The best part of the day was the spice tour at the hotel's spice garden. We mentioned that we wanted to buy some spices and it turns out our guide has a side hustle taking hotel guests into town to his uncle's spice market booth. It was great. We learned about his family - his father has 3 wives and 20 kids but he only has 1 wife and is expecting his first child. Of course he is. You have to love someone working for their tip. Regardless, we did get some spices.
We did see something I've never seen before. Our hotel is equipped with an Evening Breeze over the beds. It's this weird overhead cooling system. I have to admit, we did love it.
We leave in a few minutes for the airport. It's a 6 hour flight to Doha and then a 14 hour flight to JFK so we have quite a bit of travel ahead of us.
Here are the Trip Awards
Best Hotel - The ranking from best to worst is Ol Donyo Lodge, Gorilla Sanctuary, Zuri Zanzibar, Boma Guesthouse, Little Governors, Hemingway's. Hemingway's is a nice hotel but it lost a lot of points for the great OJ catastrophe of 2021. I won't go into details but let's just say that I could not lose Henry in the airport because I just had to follow the trail of OJ.
Best Meal - It definitely wasn't the Hardees we had at the Nairobi airport. Do those even still exist in the US? For Henry, it was Carnivore. For Chris, I liked Carnivore but I think any of the dinners at the Gorilla Sanctuary was better.
Trip Highlight - Gorilla trekking, no contest.
Favorite animal - For Henry, baby Cheetah. For Chris, the badass Lioness.
Best Covid Test - The guy in Nairobi - quick and gentle.
Best Bed - Zuri Zanzibar had by far the most comfortable beds and the best pillows. All of the beds were basically the same and Zuri was so so much better.
Best Bar - Zuri Zanzibar on the beach. Great drinks.
Best Lion - The entire family chowing on the buffalo
Best Airport - Since many of them were just an airstrip in the middle of nowhere, we are going with Doha. Seriously, this is us "at the airport" in Kenya
