Chris and Henry go to the tea country

Today was a disappointing day.  I know what you're thinking...  Those guys are in Sri Lanka where it's not 110 degrees in the shade so how bad could it be.

We were supposed to drive 5 hours from Lion Rock into the hills of the tea country.  It took almost 9 hours!! It started to rain so the traffic got really bad and then one of the roads had a landslide on it so we had to go the long way around.  And the roads are really steep and twisty.  Did I mention it was raining?

Along the way, we stopped at a few stores to do some shopping.  The wood carving place was our favorite.  We also stopped for lunch at a buffet place.  Henry and I are getting sick of fancy food (anyone feel sorry for us yet?) so we both loaded up our plates with the horrible mac-and-cheese.

We are staying at the Ceylon Tea Trails hotel.  It consists of 5 bungalows on a working tea estate.  To get to it, we drove along this twisty one-lane road slicing across the hills to the entrance of the estate.  At the entrance, we transferred to a jeep for the final leg of the trip because the roads required a 4x4.

At first glance, our bungalow did not disappoint.

We had afternoon tea and met with the chef to discuss the dinner menu. Feel bad for us yet?

But then we went to our room and Henry did not have a real bed.  He had this tiny roll-away stuck in the corner.  Unacceptable.

So back in the jeep to move to another bungalow on the other side of the lake.  And it's still raining.  However, Henry now has a real bed.

Dinner did not disappoint.  Crab cake and prawns, pumpkin soup, pork, and passion fruit cheesecake. 2 of the courses are paired with a tea.

As a life long tea drinker, I am really excited to see the tea country.  Ceylon tea is the best in the world. We have a tea factory tour tomorrow morning and a hike through the tea country in the afternoon.  The weather forecast is calling for drizzle.

Some people asked what a tuk tuk is. See below.  It's a 3-wheeled taxi commonly found in Asia, the Pacific islands and South America.
