Another early morning game drive. We did not see any leopards but we did see a jackal up close.
Here is a video of what it's like riding in the safari jeep
After breakfast at the tent camp, we flew from Yala back to Colombo. This plane was slightly larger than the seaplane we arrived on.
We will relax at the same Wallawwa Hotel where we spent our first night because we have a very early and very long trip home. The car is picking us up at 1:30 am to take us to the airport for our 4:15 am flight. It's 5 hours to Doha and then 14 hours back to JFK. Our strategy is to try to stay awake for the first leg and then sleep most of the second to reset our clocks.
The food has been great but we are definitely sick of curry. BBQ last night - chicken, chicken sausage, pork chop, baked potato, cole slaw and a green salad. So good.
The staff at the Wallawwa taught Henry and I how to swing a cricket bat.
It was another amazing adventure. It's time for the trip awards.
Best Activity - We can't pick a definitive winner but our top 3 are Tea Factory, Lion Rock climb and leopard sighting
Best Meal not Breakfast - Corn quesadilla meal at Water Garden
Best Breakfast - Tea Trails. The hash browns pushed them over the top.
Best Bread - Water Garden. Who knew the bread in Sri Lanka would be so good that it would earn a separate category? They have these special bread delivery tuk tuks to deliver bread to the villages. Similar to an Ice Cream truck except they play Beethoven so you can hear them coming.
Best Curry - Jaga food
Best Sorbet - Coconut Mint at Water Garden
Best Hotel - This was tough. We went with Water Garden but it was only slightly better than Tea Trails. Water Garden had the better room and better pool. Tea Trails had the better tea and slightly better activities. The food was comparable.
Best Hotel Room - Water Garden. We had a villa so it's not even a contest.
Best Pool - Water Garden. There was a big pool and a plunge pool at the villa so hard to compete
Best Internet Service - Tea Trails in a landslide. Leopard Trails had none at all. The others had spotty wifi at best.
Best Animal Sighting - Leopard
(For Henry Only) Sri Lanka or Japan - It was a tough decision but Japan. There is still so much more to see in Japan so we could easily go back. We feel like we saw it all in Sri Lanka.
Until next time...
