Phu Quoc Beach Day #2

So this was not the most exciting day but much needed after our very busy trip.  We went for a swim, sat on the beach, checked the election results, ate and went through at least 2 bartenders on the eponymous veranda of La Veranda Hotel.

Random Trip Thoughts in No Particular Order:

  1. Phu Quoc has squeaky sand especially at night
  2. Every guide was surprised to learn that Angela was Asian and were equally surprised that Trevor and I can actually use chopsticks.  In addition, every guide wanted to know when Angela was going to have babies.
  3. Best comment from any guide - From Vietnam Stacy giving details on a typical night out "we drink until someone could get killed"
  4. "I'm my own person" was a common theme of the trip
  5. La Veranda has the best Pina Coladas on the island
  6. There are a lot of Russian tourists on Phu Quoc.
  7. We learned about 1-1-1-1-1 from the Vietnamese Herman Cain at the VC house/farm/cooking school.  We think this is the ratio of salt-bitter-spice-sugar-water needed in every sauce.
  8. Many discussions around the difference between a snack and a meal.  For example, hot dog is a snack but if you add fries then it becomes a meal. No agreement was reached for the point when a salad goes from snack to meal.
  9. Special shout-out to the waiter at Villa Chandara who worked so hard to take a picture of us with Angela's camera
We are currently still on that veranda.  They have this great 3-person band.  Imagine a wedding band singing all the great hits from the 70s and 80s but with a Vietnamese accent.  There's been some Elton John and Tina Turner and Madonna.  Special mention for their version of Green, Green Grass of Home.

Dessert

Tomorrow, I start my 3 flight trip home.  We have a long layover in Saigon.  I leave Angela and Trevor in Hong Kong where they will visit with Angela's mom for a few days.
