Today was our last full day in Laos. We started off the day with yet another boat ride but only a short one across the Mekong River. On the other side of the river, we toured both a village and Wat Long Khun.
Wat Long Khun is a temple complex dating back to the 18th century which was used as a place for the royal family to meditate. A king would meditate at this complex for a few days before his coronation. Notice the French and Laos details in the buildings. Laos was a French colony until the 1950s.
Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site. UNESCO has provided funds to pave the main road in the village and to restore some of this temple complex.
The best part of this day was our ex-Buddhist monk guide Pang giving us a Dharma talk in front of the temple. He told stories about how it doesn't matter which religion you practice since we all go to the same Heaven and Hell and about how you start with nothing and you end with nothing so you should live your best life.
We ended the day with a visit to the Kuang Si Falls. These beautiful waterfalls cascade down in many levels ending with turquoise pools which are a wonderful respite from the heat.
On the walk through the forest to the falls, we visited the Free the Bears project – home to a group of rescued Asiatic Black (Moon) Bears and one Malayan Sun Bear.
We have an early morning tomorrow... starting with giving alms to the monks before dawn. In the afternoon, we fly to Cambodia.
