92 Miles Left...

The Breakers is a truly beautiful hotel but it is no Ocean House.  Unlike Ocean House, they charge you for every little thing including post cards and add a 20% service charge to every transaction.  However, they do have great Wifi and the valets do not move the seat in the car.  Butch thinks there should be a special circle of hell for valets who move the seat and mirrors when they park the car.

After a wonderful morning at The Breakers... a walk on the beach and a buffet breakfast... we started our 185 mile drive across Florida.

Do you know how any longish drive in the United States takes you past at least 1 or 2 of those brown signs marking some historical site? For example, the James Polk Birthplace or the Oxen Yoke Museum.  There is not a single historical site from Palm Beach to Tampa.

Here is the abridged version of our trip:

"Lots of cows. I didn't realize there were so many cows."
30 minutes later...
"Lots of cows."
"Yeah. And orange trees."
30 minutes later...
"So who knew Florida had so many cows?"
30 minutes later...
"We've been driving past this Lykes Ranch for awhile."
"Yeah. Wonder how big it is."
"337,000 acres. Thank God for Google."
"How big is Connecticut?"
"3.5 million acres"
30 minutes later...
"92 more miles"
"91 more miles"
"90 more miles"
"89 more miles"
"Shut up"
30 minutes later...
"What kind of farm is that?"
"Sod"
30 minutes later...
"More cows"
"I can't believe we did not pass a single Waffle House"
"Everyone loves the Waffle House"
30 minutes later...
"OMG. That is a huge bridge"

The destination at the end of the 185 miles was The Don Cesar hotel in St. Petersburg.  The Don Cesar is a great old and very pink hotel on the St. Petersburg Beach.

After a quick lunch, we headed straight for the beach.  Much calmer over here on the West Side of Florida.  That's the hotel in the background.

After the beach, we went to Bern Steakhouse for dinner.  It's a great place for steak but is probably most famous for its extensive wine list and the dessert room on the second floor.
