Travel Day

I'm about to start my 14 hours of travel home so it's time for the trip summary.

  • Countries Visited: Guatemala (40), Belize (41)
  • Number of hotels: 5 if we include the Holiday Inn Express in Queens
  • Modes of transportation: automobile, plane, boat, bike, tuk-tuk, golf cart
  • Best experience: Tikal. Not even a contest. Snorkeling is always fun but Tikal is unique.
  • Favorite Hotel: Las Lagunas in Flores. The Matachica in Belize is very nice but nothing special compared to any luxury resort in the Caribbean.
  • Most unusual food: Nothing. This one is getting harder and harder to satisfy as I travel more. I did not have a single bad meal. Everything was really good but, besides the tortilla, nothing really stands out.  The french toast at Las Lagunas maybe.

Would I go back?

Guatemala was great but I'm going to put it in the one-and-done group with Bolivia.

The mosquitos and I voted on Belize and their vote does not count.  A few days relaxing at the beach was something I really needed but the mosquitos make it doubtful that I'd return to Ambergris Caye. I will consider visiting other parts of Belize though.  It's one of the Central America countries that is doing more to protect their natural resources and promoting eco-tourism to combat climate change.  I recommend Ambergris Caye if you are an American who is just starting to travel beyond the easy destinations.  Consider it exotic travel with training wheels.

Fish as seen from the end of the dock. And, yes, the water is really that clear here.

50 by 50 Update: The count now stands at 41.  With the amount of travel planned for next year, 50 by 50 will be finished ahead of schedule.  Trump getting us all killed is the only thing that stands in my way.  I met a number of Americans here and "Trump getting us all killed" is a common concern.  I met this couple from D.C. who both work in government.  They have a picture of Robert Mueller by their front door so they can salute him everyday.

Stay tuned for 2018 travel including Japan and a train trip through Eastern Europe.  I have to see how Butch is feeling before booking our winter trip but Panama is being considered.

I'll leave you with a few more crazy pictures:

Christmas Tree is the main square in Flores.  Sponsored by the local beer company.  See the logo on the top.

Blinged up truck in Guatemala.  They all look like this.

This is the last entry unless my trip home is eventful.  "Eventful" is the worst kind of plane travel.
