Hello Guatemala

After an uneventful flight, I safely arrived in Guatemala City.  They have an interesting customs process at the airport.  When you get to the head of the line, they randomly give you a green or red light.  Red light means they go through your bags.  Guess who got a red light?

My driver, Felix, picked me up at the airport and drove me on to Antigua.  Felix told me some history of the country and, more importantly, he gave me a list of all the foods and drinks that I need to try.  Chocolate is high on the list.  He also recommended that I try Pollo Campero which is the KFC of Latin America.

Done. There's one in Antigua.

Antigua is a city in the Guatemalan highlands which served as the previous capital of Guatemala until it was mostly destroyed by an earthquake. It was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1979.  I have a walking tour of the city tomorrow morning so today I just wandered around the main square area and did some shopping.  Felix told me "just like New York, all the good shops are on 5th Avenue."

Many of the shops have those horrible mass produced trinkets but I did find a few places with some beautiful Mayan art.  I need to go back to one of the shops tomorrow with the guide because I want to ship some things home but I had trouble understanding the instructions from the shopkeeper.

I'm staying at the Posada del Angel.  Charming does not even begin to describe this 8 room hotel.

I'm rapidly running out of energy.  Not sure what I'll do for dinner.  Still full from my Pollo Campero.  I started reading "Thank You For Being Late" on the plane.  Shout out to Nina for the recommendation. I also have 'Stranger Things Season 2" downloaded.  So I'll probably watch an episode or read a bit and then go to bed early.  I have a busy day tomorrow. Besides the aforementioned Antigua tour, I travel on to the Lake Atitlan region.  This is one of my typical fast paced trips so you can understand why Butch decided to skip.
