Santiago

Today, we relaxed a bit at the hotel before heading out for a half-day tour of Santiago.  For the most part, the city is exactly as I expected - a mix of French and Spanish colonial architecture, relatively new construction due to the high number of earthquakes, urban sprawl and smog.  It is nothing what Butch expected.  He expected to feel less safe.  The city has a new feel to it probably because of the number of times things have been rebuilt.  There are bike lanes everywhere and they shut down many of the streets to car traffic on Sunday in order to allow people to bike more.

Here's someone making use of the car free streets

Our tour took us to the city center where the government buildings are, a very modern neighborhood to the east, the fish market and to the top of the San Cristobal Hill where there's a... wait for it... giant statue of the Virgin Mary.

We rode the funicular to the top of the hill.  Funicular ride is another first for Butch.

We are now resting up at the hotel before heading out for dinner. I'm enjoying a Pisco Sour and Butch is having a beer.  And,  yes, the beer is served in a wine glass.
