Cars & Bars

Anyone who knows Butch and I know that we are perpetually shopping for cars.  Our friend Larina scored us press passes to the International Car Show at Jacob Javits.  Butch and I were in our glory shopping for cars.  In addition to looking for an upgrade to the trusty Focus, our favorites were easily the Camaro ZL1 and the Maserati.  The best part of the car show was watching Butch go from explaining to the Maserati salesman that there is no way "his American ass would fit in a Maserati" to Butch scheduling a test drive in Westport.

Here's a picture of the Camaro

After the car show, we started the "bars" portion of the day which consisted of a bar crawl of the classic NYC midtown bars.

First stop... Bemelmans at The Carlyle. Bemelmans is famous for Ludwig Bemelmans' murals that adorn the walls of the bar. In addition to a round of drinks, we had some snacks and our first of way too many nuts.  Bemelmans also had the best bartender of the day.  He's worked in many of the great bars including The Rainbow Room and Campbell's Apartment and shared a wealth of tips for the rest of the the day.

It was a beautiful day so we took an unscheduled trip through Central Park stopping at Bar #2... The Boat House.

After leaving The Boat House, Larina suggested we walk through the zoo on our way to The Plaza. So, we walked and walked (Larina missed a turn) and finally found the zoo.  I think this guy was smuggling an animal out on his head.

At The Plaza, we had drinks in the Palm Court.  We were a little disappointed because the Martini Cart was not available.  The Palm Court and the other new bars are nice but The Plaza will continue to disappoint until The Oak Bar is open again.

No rest for the weary, after leaving The Plaza, we headed to the rooftop bar, Salon De Ning, on the roof of The Peninsula.  However, we could not get a seat so we headed across the street and finished the day at Bar #4... The King Cole Bar at The St. Regis.

I think the King Cole Bar had the most interesting selection of cocktails including an entire Bloody Mary menu.

All and all it was a VERY successful day.  Except maybe for the amount of nuts we consumed. Seriously, I was worried that we would turn into squirrels. Kudos to Larina for planning the entire thing.
